Plasma low-density lipoprotein
(LDL), which has entered the intima, become modified and induces changes in the endothelium leading to monocyte migration. Within the intima further oxidation of LDL leads to form that is actively taken up by
macrophages to form foam
cells. Macrophage death releases lipid to form the core. Growth factors released by endothelial cells and macrophages stimulate smooth muscle growth and connective tissue matrix synthesis.
