Mechanism of Thrombus in Atherosclerosis

¡@

Endothelial erosion

-  the thrombus is superficial, i.e., on the surface of the plaque

¡@

Disruption

- there is a component deep in the plaque and a component in the lumen.

The Different Components of Thrombus after Disruption

¡@

The thrombus within the plaque has a large component of platelets, as thrombus begins to project into the lumen the fibrin component becomes more dominant, while the occluding thrombus is made up of a network of fibrin in which there are numerous trapped red cells. Over the surface of the mural thrombus there is also a layer of platelets.
